Well darn. The Fiesta loves eating oil.

This little fiesta is hungry shall I say. I popped the hood and checked the dipstick for oil, after fumbling around for 5 minutes looking for the hood release, which turned out to be a big red lever right on the bottom of the steering column.

oil level was a pinky-width below the minimum level notch. we had about 500ml of 10W-40 to pour in (supplied by my older cousin, who is the owner of the car, who also warned us of its eating habits) and the level went back up to 3/4 to full. Should I get a heavier weight oil to lower its consumption/leakage and maybe get a leak stopper to prevent a possible oil issue?

The "high milage" oils have additives to burn off more slowly. How many miles on motor?

(edit) you don't want a heavier weight oil unless you are having oil pressure problems or the engine is significantly worn.

The engine doesn't seem to have significant wear (at least from the oil), I'm a bit unsure of the mileage, I believe the odometer only shows 5 figures.

Before you do anything...

What year is it, and when was the last time the PCV valve was changed?

Haven't got a clue. Might keep those in mind when I meet with my cousin again.

I would stick with close to the recommended weight (sometimes a little bit heavier, like a 10w30 if 5w30 is recommended), and try a high milage oil.

My wife's car (VW, 2008 2.0 TSI) calls for 0w20 oil. I run it on 5w30 and the engine became much much quieter. It always sounded a bit clattery like a diesel until I went to the heavier oil. I'll use 5w20 in the winter if I can find it. It is a turbo motor and also seems to consume a bit of oil (1 qt every 2000-3000 miles) but not at an alarming rate for a 90K mile turbo engine. I do need to remember to check it though.

Subaru recommends 5W-30 in the Turbo and 0W-20 in the non turbo.

Yeah not same company but that could be why that helped.

just talked to my cousin, he said it was run lacking oil for some time (Not by him). so I'm sure it'll need a heavier oil to compensate for ring wear.
